¡®Dongdo-dongki-ron'(ÔÔÔ³ÔÔÐïÖå) as a Epistemological Conversion for the Deconstruction of ¡®Orientalism'
                                                         Woo Sil-ha, Yonsei University

In this paper I investigate the problem of ¡®Orientalism¡¯(Edward W. Said) and the meaning of 'Dongdo-dongki-ron'(ÔÔÔ³ÔÔÐïÖå)  as a epistemological conversion for the deconstruction of Orientalism.
As a cultural hegemony, Orientalism reproduces itself by means of various kinds of cultural-goods and mass-media. And the cultural peculialities of the Third World  increasingly approximate  to those of the West. Orientalist has stigmatized  oriental culture as a ¡®irrational¡¯ ¡®unscientific¡¯ ¡®mysterious¡¯ one. For deconstruction of Orientalism, ¡®Dongdo-dongki-ron¡¯(ÔÔÔ³ÔÔÐïÖå: to understand the unique features of the Far East culture through the unique world-view and philosopy of Far East) is an epistemological presupposition.
¡®Dongdo-dongki-ron¡¯ is based on the concept of the late 19th century ¡®dongdo-seuki-ron¡¯(ÔÔÔ³à¤ÐïÖå). But, ¡®Dongdo-dongki-ron¡¯ which I present in this paper, eliminate the ethnocentric value judgment involved in  ¡®dongdo-seuki-ron¡¯. So I term Far East cultural text ¡®dongki¡¯(ÔÔÐï) and term  the unique world-view and philosopy of Far East ¡®Dongdo¡¯(ÔÔÔ³).
Finally ¡®Dongdo-dongki-ron¡¯ means to decoding the unique features of the Far East cultural text(=dongki=ÔÔÐï) through the unique world-view and philosopy of Far East(=dongdo=ÔÔÔ³). So ¡®Dongdo-dongki-ron¡¯ is a ¡®lagitimate prejudices¡¯(Hhans Georg Gadamer) in decoding Far East cultural text.
I present 'Dongdo-dongki-ron' as an alternative perspective for deconstructing Orientalism, by overcoming cultural dependency theory and cultural imperialism which merely exposes the socio-cultural reproduction mechanism and the ideological characteristics of Orientalism.
